  Several factors impact the effectiveness of erosion control blankets, and understanding these can help ensure their success in your project.

  Site Conditions: The type of soil, slope steepness, and climate are critical in determining which erosion control blanket to use. For example, straw blankets are less effective on steep slopes or in areas with heavy rainfall, where coconut coir mats offer superior durability and moisture retention.

  Vegetation Type: The type of vegetation being established also plays a significant role. Native grasses that take longer to establish may benefit from longer-lasting blankets like coconut or wood fiber, while fast-growing vegetation like lawn grass may be better suited for straw blankets.

  Installation Quality: Proper installation is crucial. Poor installation can lead to the blanket failing, allowing soil erosion to occur. Blankets should be tightly secured with no gaps to ensure they function effectively. Additionally, using a rolled erosion control product (RECP), which is designed and tested to reduce soil loss on slopes, can significantly enhance the efficacy of these products.

  Maintenance: Regular inspections, especially after heavy rainfall, are important to maintain the integrity of the blankets. Any damaged or displaced sections should be promptly repaired to prevent erosion from worsening.
